Joseph & His Coat of Many Colors

[ 0 ] June 4, 2011 | ViWest

Jacob and his family lived in the land of Canaan where his father had lived.  His son Joseph and brothers fed the flock daily.  Jacob loved Joseph more than all the other sons. And he made Joseph a coat of many colors.    His brothers were very jealous and hated him, and could not speak to him in a friendly way.  Joseph had a dream and told his brothers about it, and now they hated him even more.  In one of Joseph’s dream he told about how they would all bow down to him.  His father rebuke him and said:  ”Shall your mother and I and your brothers really come to bow down to you?” His brothers asked: “Do you really think you are going to be king and rule over us?” Now they hated Joseph more than ever because of what he had said about his dream.”

Joseph’s brothers were feeding their father’s flock in Shechem. Jacob told Joseph to go to his brothers and see how they were doing, and to come back and let him know. But when Joseph got to Shechem he learned that his brother’s had left. A man told him that his brothers went to Dothan. But before he got there, they saw him coming and made plans to kill him. They wanted to kill Joseph and throw him into a pit and say that some wild animal ate him. His brother Reuben heard their plans and said: “Let’s not kill him, just throw him into a dry well out here in the desert.” Reuben planned to rescue Joseph later and take him back to his father. As Joseph’s brothers sat down to eat, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Judah said: “What will we gain if we kill our brother and hide his body? Let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not harm him. After all, he is our brother.” And they all agreed.

Joseph’s brothers killed a goat and dipped his coat of many colors in the blood. They gave the coat to their father and told him that a wild animal had eaten Joseph. Jacob mourned for Joseph a long time, and said: “I will go to my grave, mourning for my son.”

Meanwhile, the Midianites had sold Joseph in Egypt to a man named Potiphar, who was the king’s official in charge of the palace guard.

Memory Verse:  We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him.  They are the people God called, because that was hi s plan.  Romans 8:28

Prayer:  Lord keep me safe from those who would try to harm me.   And keep me from harming others.  Thank you for protecting me.
